What my window taught me yesterday.

Yesterday I walked into my kitchen and began my morning routine. I noticed the tick of the heat turning on and streaks of light stretching across the counter. I set out my favorite mug and caught some movement out of the corner of my eye. Outside, the next door kiddos were bundled up, running across their yard with their dog chasing behind them. I didn’t name it that way in the moment. I just watched for a few seconds and smiled. I saw life as it was.

This moment reminded me of how children move through the world, that effortless way they take things in. A child can watch snow fall or a dog leap through the air and…see it. There’s something wise about that.

In DBT we practice seeing the world through “a child’s eyes” in the skill of observe. We practice entering into the current moment just as it is without meaning making.

As I gear up for a new year, and the pressure to redefine who I am and where I want to be by next year builds, I am pausing and saying, “no thank you.” I want to observe! I like looking out my kitchen window too much! Let’s practice this skill of “observe” together today.

I’m rooting for you!
